The problem
Ten thousand sites reporting every five minutes. The old dashboard took forty seconds to draw, so the operations team did not use it. They used an emailed spreadsheet that arrived each morning.
The constraint
Sites sit on hillsides, on roofs, on unreliable connections. Data arrives late, arrives twice, or does not arrive. A dashboard that assumes complete data lies to its readers every single day.
The approach
Pre-aggregation at the edge, with "what is happening" and "why" shown at two scales on the same chart. Late data recomputes only its own bucket rather than the whole day.
One decision
Missing data is drawn, not filled in. Gaps render with a distinct hatching. Operations sees "there is no data here" instead of an interpolated line that looks perfectly healthy.
The trade-off
The chart got uglier. The smooth continuous curves from the first design comps did not survive. We built both versions against real data and showed them side by side; the client chose the ugly one.
The outcome
Under 1.2 seconds to first paint. The operations team put it on the wall screen — the first time they had been willing to. The morning spreadsheet stopped going out two months later.
Since then
The hatching earned its keep once already: a region stopped reporting for six hours, and because the gap was visible it was found that day rather than at month-end reconciliation.
